Why is it socially acceptable to carry around a miniature version of a device used to torture and kill people?

The religion of Christianity and possibly other religions (I know that it is all part of one thing but I am unsure what the different sects of it are called and which one is the sects as a whole) use the crucifix as a symbol. The crucifix was used to torture and kill people. Why is it that society allows and in some places even encourages people to carry around miniature versions of a torture device around their necks? Are they worried that they might have to torture and kill a tiny leprechaun? What is it?

Same reason its socially acceptable to wear pendants of swords, pentagrams and guns. People just don’t care what other people wear.
