How did the infant formula companies get my address to send free samples in the mail?

Since I had my baby I have received a ton of free formula samples and coupons in the mail. How did these companies get my address?! I am assuming someone sells them a list of new moms, either the hospital (which would be against privacy laws, wouldn’t it?) or the vital records department of the local health department when the birth certificates are filed. Does anyone know?

Maternity stores and Babies R Us sell their customer lists. Birth certificate filings are public records, so they are available to marketers as part of the public.

When you were pregnant did you shop at any maternity stores and give them your address? I know Motherhood Maternity and Thyme Maternity both send their lists to formula companies and unless you specifically tell them not to it’s perfectly legal.

I think the hospital or your dr office may do it. have you ever bought anything off the internet for the baby or put your name in any type of baby websites? I think infamil got my address from the hospital because that is the formula company they used at the time and as soon as I got home I started getting all kinds of coupons and tree samples of it for months. it will stop after the first 6-12 months. it did for me.
