Here is what I am needing to know:
How do I take a digital photo (lets say of my dog) and I want to take just the dog out of the picture so that I can use it in another file. I know how to crop but that doesnt take out just the dog but anything in the rectangle crop bock is still there. I really just need to take the picture of the dog from the edges and only the dog itsel. Any help would greatly be appreciated!

watch this Russell Brown video, explains and excellent way to do this, particularly if you are using your dog, meaning fur etc

this tutorial is for cs3 but i think it will work with just about all versions
depending what version you have , you would use lasso tool, or magnetic lasso tool to select around dog area only, and copy and paste into new layer, save edit file as psd, if thee are fine hairs around border, you would either edit out or select carefully with selection tools, there is mask, and quick mask options for covering outside around objects, but lasso tool may be sufficient, also when selecting to copy and paste objects, you can apply feathered edges to selection around three pixels or so, then you can use that to paste over other image, or leave copy as transparent png or gif or websites,
