My grandfather (over70) seriously hurt his ankle yesterday evening. He went to the emergency room today and it is very bad. His fibula is broken in more than 2 pieces, the ligament connected is torn, and possibly tore the one on the other side. He is most likely having surgery tomorrow. What will be entailed in his recovery, and how long will it take before he can start moving around on his own again?

maybe months longer if its a case like yours 4 or 5 months at least so i’ve heard
I had reconstructive surgery on my ankle and i was on crutches for 2 weeks, i was not allowed to put any weight on it whatsoever. the cast was big in order to allow for swelling after the surgery. after the 2 weeks i got my first cast off and the staples removed form the incision and they put another smaller cast on which i had for a week (and they gave me a boot so i could walk on it) and then they cut the cast in half (long ways) to allow me to remove it and begin physical therapy. in your case, because the bone is broken he should be on crutches for anywhere from 6-8 weeks and because he is older his bone will heal slower
