For my essay I have to compare and contrast Odysseus and Beowulf. I need help for my first paragraph. How am I supposed to make it interesting when all I’m doing is simply comparing two characters. I have to have a hook and a thesis and give an idea what the essay is gonna be about while still being interesting but how do you say something along the lines of "These two characters have similarities and differences" and make it interesting? I really hate these types of essays.

You might open it by saying, "We need heroes. We have always needed heroes. People in locations as diverse as ancient Greece and Northern Europe had their warriors and wrote epic poems about them. The Odyssey of Homer and Beowulf, by an unknown Anglo-Saxon poet, both tell of outstanding heroes with the sorts of similarities common to heroes and differences that make their heroes unique as well. Beowulf and Odysseus are definitely not just the same hero, different language."
