How much is the cancellation fee for Verizon Wireless?

I’m only about halfway through my contract but I’m considering switching carriers (for various reasons). How much would the cancellation fee be? And how would I even go about canceling? Do I just go ahead and switch to another carrier or do I have to go through Verizon first?

I believe the early termination fee is $175 per line but it decreases $5 per month for each month you’ve had your service, so if this is the 5th month you’ve been in contract, your early termination fee would be $150 per line.

Let’s say you wanted to switch to AT&T, you would go into an AT&T store first to do what is called a port request where AT&T requests that Verizon give your phone number to AT&T so you can use it on the AT&T network. When Verizon receives the port request from AT&T they cancel your Verizon account and you receive a final bill with the partial charges for the billing cycle and the early termination fees.

The porting process takes about 10 minutes. All you will need is your Verizon account number and your password you use to access your Verizon account (if you have one.) AT&T will perform a brief credit check and then establish a new account for you with your same phone number. You will not need to contact Verizon afterwards, as they will have already cancelled your account.

If you go directly to Verizon to cancel your service you will lose your phone number and will not be able to get the same phone number when you go to another carrier to establish service.

You have to call Verizon directly to cancel your contract. Standard cancellation fee is $175 per line. since you are halfway through your contract, you might get a discount of about $60 ($5 per month for each month fulfilled). Going to another carrier does not automatically cancel your contract with Verizon. It just means you have two contracts.
