How someone help me answer questions I have about swimming?

How can I be calm at the swimming pool while doing any activities? I always get nervous. Such as when I swim without holding on to anything. I can only do it for about 2 seconds then I have to stand up again. I find it very difficult to breathe under water.

I cannot even float,

Any tips on how to be calm and do these things properly: dog paddle, putting your head fully in water while being able to breathe and any other basics.

Also if possible, tell me how to do practise them at home :)

Thanks.

Get a kickboard and just do 100m five times with it. Just on your own steady pace. Once you master that and you feel pretty confident lay your leg starting from you knees down. onto the edge of the pool so your facing down into the water while your legs are will on shore. And just do what you want to do with your arms that you would do. just remember if you were to drown( highly unlikely) 3 year old children out there can do it.
    Have fun

Well, i hate to sound like a broken record but "face your fears"

Tell you what, next time you find yourself at the pool, get some goggles on (chlorine kinda stings your eyes) take very deep breaths for about 2 or 3 minutes. This way you will "stock up" on oxygen. Then go in the water, jump in if you feel up for it, if not, just walk in, and simply hold your nose so water doesn’t seep in and hold your breath and let yourself sink. Don’t worry you won’t die or drown (unless you try to scream and water gets in your lungs) that oxygen you would’ve just inhaled can and WILL keep you alive for more than enough time even if the unthinkable happens.
The reason why i’m telling you to let yourself sink is, to find out how much support the water gives you. If it’s fresh water…… not much. Salt water has more density to it so you won’t sink as much in salt water, as you’d do in fresh water. Try it.
When you find that out, when you’ll settle at a depth .. you will know how much effort you have to do, to keep yourself afloat. Knowing that, you’ll know when it’s ok to relax and "tread water" or panic and start moving or else u sink back to that point where water supports you with zero effort, while having your lungs full that shouldn’t be the bottom of the pool, unless you weigh 200 pounds.

What i remember freaking ME out when i had the very same problem is that the moment water touched my face i began to panic. To this day i can’t keep completely calm when i feel water around my face, that is why i dive, more than i swim on the surface.

You can practice geting used to that by submerging slooooooowly, into any water deep enough to cover your head… from nose to behind your ears. I say that because after the ears get filled with water, you’ll start hearing differently. The silence can calm you or creep you out, depending on what type of person you are.

Also, submerging your head under water, will not allow any AIR to get in your lungs … you’ll get WATER in them, and drown, so that’s neither basic nor desirable, unless you have a death wish.
Get used to water being around you and you’ll be ok.
Take it from a guy that grew up in a sea side town where the best place to be was anywhere within walking distance of the sea and a beer bottle or your girl, whichever chose to stay behind.

well i know you must be scared but you just have to try

i have been going in water constantly and dont get afraid so you need top go swimming regularly. maybe get swimming lessons for a few months the teachers are really nice and they help you feel safe. try relaxing in teh water like imagining that you are a fish or a dolphin see underwater like you are a sea creature

conserntrate on water patterns and stuff not whats going on
look at cracks in teh water or anything like that. play a game of volley ball over the flags in the water or throw a ball. throw some toys or something that you really want down to the bottom of the pool like all of your coin money or something so you try and get you self to get it back

try jumping into the water and stuff like that so you go under without feeling nervous then you cant stop your self when you have jumped

    hope ive helped good luck

    For me

    STAY IN SHALLOW POOL-FOR NOW

    1. Bubbles.
    Take a deep breath.(mouth)
Sit down, underwater , exhale (nose)

    Start somewhere shallow.

    When you can do that.

    Time to learn the turtle.
Deep breath- Then go into fetal position.

That just shows you that you CAN indeed FLOAT.

Do bubbles again. (Breathing will allow you not to get tired easily)

    Now,
    Do wall kicks.

Practice your STREAMLINE- do youtube videos and watch whatever you want to practice

Personally I get inspired when watching phelps videos- and I learned swimming without the need for a coach. JUST YOUTUBE IT!.

So. Kick off the wall and see how far you can go with a STREAMLINE body.

    Round 2.
    Same thing + FLUTTERKICKS

    Round 3
Same thing as above (wall kick + flutter kick ) now add ARMS
Spear the water. dont slap it. ( stab the water with your arms)

(youtube- learn - HIGH ELBOW CATCH)

i like the lyndsay benko videos on freestyle. butterfly on phelps.

    anyway..

once you can do the above.

    time to learn breathing.

    but before that.
    master the bubbles.
be able to do QUICK bubble breaths

up down up down up down mouth nose mouth nose mouth nose.

    now.
do the bubbles with your INHALE MOUTH when your head is tilted sidewards on the water *just like what you would do when swimming0 but right now just do it while standing on water.

    so.
    Stand up.
(your head should be close to the water so you can lay half your face on it) - like you would when you are swimming

Turn your head ( INHALE MOUTH)

    then look down.
    Sink
    Exhale - NOSE.

OK back to the wall kick

    wall kick_ flutterkick-_ arms

DONT WATER BREATHE YET!- YOULL CHOKE!

    First practice this

    wall kick
    flutterkick
    arms
    then HIP ROTATION
also tilt your head to JUST ONE SIDE- one where youre comfortable with

    DONT BREATHE!

just turn your face out of the water while swimming
    so you can see
    1+ you wont die!
    2+ its doable
    3+ how it feels
4+ how much more you need to turn your body to be able to breathe

once you learn those things *oh remember to do stretchings specially your neck before doing this*

    anyway… after all that
you can attempt to breathe just ONCE

kick off. flutter. arms. hips. head. breathe

    then stop
    do it again
dont try to do the WHOLE POOL LENGTH
just try to set SMALL goals

that goes with all the other strokes (just the pattern)

    small goals
    kicks
    legs
    arms
    hips
    head
    breathe

    God Bless.
