What is the salesman doing with that calculator?

When you balk at the price of something (guitars, cars, art, etc) the salesperson will invariably whip out a calculator and start tapping away and after several calculations he will then give you a slightly lower price. What is he calculating? Is it just a show? I’d like to know exactly what figures he’s working on and why it seems so complicated.

Preferably I’d like an answer from a salesperson who does this.

I used to work in a jewelry store part-time. Most sales people have a cushion to work with as far as price. In my situation I had a 5% discount that I could immediately offer the customer and then a possible additional 5% if the item was over a certain $$ amount. Plus the calculator can also give the salesman an idea on what their commission pay-out would be? It’s about selling the item and calculating the commission.
