Why does only the American League use a DH while the National League pitchers have to bat?

Is it because of change, or what? What’s the reasoning of a DH and why is it only in the American league?

Back in the 60s and early 70s, the AL had a big dip in offense, and attendance declined as a result. They used a DH as an experiment, people liked it, and offense and attendance went up, so they kept it.
The NL voted on it, but they decided not to use it (I think it did come really close, though).
Honestly, I like the difference between the leagues.
