Why do so many people not want Universal Health Coverage?

In my opinion the Government should be in charge of the safety and protection of it’s people and not much else.
The Government shouldn’t be big and all powerful, should not be making it’s politicians rich through corruption or lobbyists. It should merely be protecting the people whether physically or socially.
That is at the least, they should provide the basic services of any society to it’s people. Police, Fire Protection, Military Protection and Medical Care.
All of these things bar Medical Care are currently run by the government and with good reason! Can you imagine a world where the police are controlled by corporations? It would be like something out of a dark future movie.

In short, I understand entirely why huge corporations and politicians receiving hand outs from the industry don’t want Universal Health Care but why do the general population not?

Personally, I just want to have choices. I want to be able to choose the plan best for me…not what the government says I should have.

If I don’t have the freedom to choose, whatever it be between, to me THAT is something out of a dark future movie.

I think there should be a government option AND private options. That way, if people need health care and can’t get it, they may participate in the government program. The government program should be affordable and available to any person who wants to have it. On the other hand, people like me who do have a business sponsored health plan should be able to choose to keep their own plan–or go with the government plan if it suits their needs better.

No offense, but governments are based on ideas. Ideas are perfect. However, humans run governments…and humans are fallible. Now why would I want the government in charge of my health, telling me what care I can and can’t have? I’d rather shop around, thank you.

Military, fire, and police protection are very different concepts than health care–they are much more impersonal in how they care for the people of a nation. Health care must be individualized because all people are different physically and mentally. Individualized is something that a government can never be–and with good reason.
