How should I teach my children to be proud of their ethnicity, but not racist?

My family comes from an Islamic background, and are also African American. And contrary to what most of the world thinks, all Muslims aren’t racist or terrorist for that matter. My question is how do I teach my children to be proud of their ethnicity, and their religion but not to be racist or close minded.

There is a very fine line between the two. If you can’t see how thin it is, there is something wrong.

Teach them to love everyone regardless of race, background, and color, but still be proud of where you come from.

Just because you are proud of your heritage and religion, doesn’t mean you are being racist. I don’t think anyone would take it that way either. As long as you don’t down others, it’s fine.

easy - just be truthful. once they see how little your people have accomplished, there is no way they could possibly be racist.

make sure they know the full background of their heritage and how to stand up for themselves if their background is insulted, but not to use it as an excuse. Don’t focus mainly on your children’s surroundings as far as race. My grandma does that to my whole family by telling us to find more black friends and asking us why we don’t have enough.

ISN’T BEING ISLAMIC KINDA OF A RELIGION? They should be proud, not ashamed, of their religion but they should be more proud of being themselves! NOBODY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEIR ETHNICITY BUT THEY SHOULDN’T LET THAT DEFINE WHO THEY ARE!

I teach my children to be proud of their accomplishments, and of the good people they are inside….the outside is just a shell.

teach them to be proud of their religion, not their ethnicity.
Correct me if im wrong but doesn’t Islam teach people to only take pride in their religion and faith and not their race/ethnicity.

Teach them about their culture, teach it in a light that will make them proud of it.
Then teach them to love people. All people.
And most importantly, set an example for them!

I fail to see why one should be proud of one’s background. That is "assigned." If your ancestors were slavers would you be proud of that? if they were slaves, would you be proud of that? Should black descendants of Thomas Jefferson be proud of Sally the slave or Thomas the slaver owner who took advantage of his slave?

Rather than focusing on the background, focus on what you are today. Try to show Americans that Muslims are not terrorists and do not support terrorists. (Good luck with that.).

  • Ice Cream Man says:

Muslim is not an ethnicity..If your East African or of African immigrant descent you are technically not African-American…with that said..

There are black muslims like Muhammad Ali who is universally admired despite his religion..He would be an ideal person for them to get to know.

  • Frank says:

teach them your language and how to make your food and raise them as a certain religion just remind them that different ethnicities dont matter
