How come when I repair computers when I ask where their windows cd that came with the computer is, they don’t know. Every computer I have bought came with oem vista cds and I keep them by the computer, so why do people lose them.

Most End Users are not really aware of the importance of the CD nor do the retail or vendors emphasize on the importance of the CD to the customer.

In bottom line, the users who RTFM are less :-)

They’re so happy, and so they keep it in some where else, and when a problem occurs. They don’t remember where it is, it’s lost. =]

Sometimes if you buy it from retails, they don’t give you the cd. I bought my laptop from officework (australia) and they didn’t give me the disc, i rang them and they said its not included.

Most of the major computer manufacturers like HP and Toshiba don’t give you a Windows CD as a way to cut back on costs. Instead, most of their computers have a restore partition on the hard drive so you can reinstall windows without a CD. That being said, HP computers come with a program that allows you to create your own restore CDs. Most people who don’t know much about computers don’t know what this is, or why it’s important, so they don’t bother to create recovery disks. It’s pretty sneaky of the manufacturers in a way, because if people don’t bother making the disks, then when they need their computer restored, they can charge people $100 to have their operating system installed - they’re not paying for windows, but for the labour involved.
