What does the reversal of the poles mean?

What is the scientific reaction expected in 2012? I don’t believe the world will end, and least not that specific date. No one knows the day and time, however, what is the Catalyst and events scientists are talking about?

A shift of the magnetic poles is something that takes thousands of years and may not start for thousands of years and has nothing to do with 2012. The new age cranks confuse this with a shift of the rotational poles. The suggestion that the rotational poles are going to shift to a new location in 2012 is even more ludicrous.

There is absolutely no scientific evidence supporting the claim that there could be a geomagnetic reversal around the time of December 21st, 2012.
the effects of such a reversal have been totally over-hyped.

We’ll most likely experience aurorae at all latitudes whilst the dipolar magnetic field settles down to its new, reversed state, and there might be a small increase in energetic particles from space
we’ll still be protected by our thick atmosphere.
