How does Xmas and Thanksgiving time off work for the Marines?

Do Marines automatically get a certain amount of time off for those holidays, or do they have to request it and subtract it from leave?

And if its just given, how much time is it?

For holidays it can depend on where they are, what they are doing and what is going to happen shortly. In Recruit Training they do have the day off but nothing more than that for the holidays. If they are deployed depends on where they are, some might have the day off, others will not. If they are at home, then generally for Thanksgiving they get Thursday to Sunday off but they cannot go beyond a certain distance. If they want to then they must request leave and have a chit signed for it. For Christmas depends on when it happens, they can be in Stand down/Exodus where they can have a week or so off and as long as they are going to stay there it isn’t chargable. If they want to go to family over 100-200 miles away then they will need leave for that.

Usually it is about four days off. And no these days have nothing to do with leave unless you take leave.

There are no guarantees and the time off may vary from command to command. And remember that some Marines will work these days and some will have to stand duty on these days off.

Lava Dog is right, it’s usually just a 96 unless you want to take leave.

any time off is requested and chargeable for leave.

Depends on what your duty is.

If you’re on a ship or on the front lines and on duty, probably won’t get it off (especially cooks, security and other such needed units that operate 24/7 - actually a cook would be VERY busy).

However if a Marine has a desk job (like a pay clerk on a base stateside or not forward deployed) he’ll probably get it off.

It will come out of his leave though if he requests it off and gets it.
