What would you do to stop a dog barking at things on a walk?

Mostly people. What would YOU use to stop unwanted behavior like this.

The dog is not aggressive, just barks at people from a long distance. Just interested to know what others would do in a case like this.

Thanks.
Chain/prong collar doesn’t work. Water does not work. Bitter apple spray does but I was told its best not to use it.

My dogs all learn what "watch me" means. I just have to tell them to watch me and it keeps their attention off whoever they were barking at. With a young, silly puppy who’s got no social skills, I hold his collar until he calms, then continue walking (that’s if he doesn’t know watch me well enough yet).

That’s my dogs; a more determined, less trained dog would get a pop with the collar and the command "no barking".
