What are some signs that my Fuel Filter and/or Fuel Pump are giving out or are gonna give out?

I have a ‘87 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera that sputters like if it were running on empty even though it has a 1/4 tank full.. When it starts sputtering it just dies all of a sudden. What is it? What could it be?

Replace your fuel filter and check to see if there is any faulty vaccuum hose. The leakage of a vaccuum hose will most often give you a hissing sound. Sputtering can also be caused by a problem in the ignition system. Maybe the plug wires or the distributor cap.
