Each funding agency deals with a different area of science. For example NIH:NIDDK gives grants for researches that have something to do with kidney, urologic, hematologic, digestive, metabolic and endocrine diseases, as well as on diabetes and nutrition.
These are the types of grants they currently support: http://www2.niddk.nih.gov/Funding/Grants/GrantTypes — you can follow the links to application submission instructions, they are different for different grants.
That is just one example. What area of science does your lab work in?
