How do I stop programs from popping up when I start my computer?

When I turn my computer on I get a warning from my antivirus to update (This warning always appears, even after updating.), AIM 6 pops up with the login waiting for me to type in my password, and Steam appears awaiting my password as well.
How do I stop these programs from auto-running when I start my computer?
They don’t sign in, they just open up, so I have no clue how to stop them.

Step 1Click on the Windows icon on your task bar (or the "Start" button in classic view).

    Step 2Choose "All Programs."

Step 3Click on the "Accessories" folder.

    Step 4Click "Run."

Step 5Type "msconfig" into the run box and then click "OK." If prompted, click "Continue."

Step 6Click on the "Startup" tab in the System Configuration window.

Step 7Uncheck the box beside the programs you wish to stop from loading on start-up.

Windows Key+R/msconfig Go to the startup tab and turn them off.
