I want to start a small company where I make website for people.

How would I start it?
How would I protect my website code from being stolen by the seller without them paying for it?
How much could I charge?
Could I charge a week or month for me to keep updating it?

I’m 17 so i’d just be charging them through paypal, so as I’d get mro experienced and older I’d make it bigger.

When I design websites, I usually give them the code as part of the deal - that way they can maintain the site on their own because I actually don’t want to do it.

Otherwise, you can maintain it for a fee. Charge per month for it. I didn’t want to get into maintaining sites for people. But basically let’s use a round number and say you charge $100 per hour for contracting. I would then say I’ll charge $100 a month for maintenance for up to 4 hours of maintenance a month. They may not use the four hours of maintenance but then they see they are getting up to 4 hours for $25/hour. I also usually say maintenance does not include re-design costs, only modifications. Re-design and anything above four hours is back to the $100 per hour but if they are on my "subscription" plan I’ll reduce that to $75/hour. Something like that

If you really want to keep the code, just host the site for them. Tell them up front that part of the deal is that you maintain the code and don’t give it to them. I never personally did that myself because if I were a customer and spent all this money on a site, I’d want a copy of it even if that person maintained it so I never did that to my clients.

Anyway, I hope that this info helps.

If you do want to protect your code, you can encrypt or obfuscate it in some way. People will often do this with their PHP code. The free tools are not great but they are good enough. (not great meaning possibly decryptable)

    Good luck!

The best advise i can give you is do a search on the internet and take a look at some of the Websites out there and what they charge for design…although i must say right up front…your competition will be pretty fierce..considering the fact most websites are becoming more user friendly with HTML and FTP loading for easy use..also they are masking and encrypting their pay pal codes so no one steals them……the free websites i am mentioning are Weebly.com and there are a quite a few other free ones out there…and as a matter of fact my first website was free and i built in on my own with click and drag technology built into the userface….and the website i built only took 2 hours…so figure $30 an hour for a good rate for starters.
