What to expect at the first gynecologist appointment?

I’m 18 and being referred to a gynecologist for what my doctor thinks is Endometriosis. I’ve never been to one before!

What can I expect at my first appointment?
What should I do if my period is when the appointment is? (my periods are so irregular that I couldn’t possibly predict)

Thanks.

Well the whole thing is kind of weird really, but it’s not that bad. The pap smear is the worst thing, and it’s a bit uncomfortable but it’s not bad.

They will use a speculum…a clear plastic thing that looks like a duck bill lol they insert that into your vagina and open it up so they can see your cervix. The Dr. will prod your belly and feel your uterus; it probably won’t hurt but you should tell her if it does (she will probably ask). As for the pap smear, some doctors do it differently but when I had mine done, she used a long thing that looked like a mascara want and just scraped around a bit. It didn’t hurt, but it was pretty annoying. It only lasted a couple of seconds, and then it was all over. Nothing to be nervous about at all.

As for being on your period, I’ve never had that problem myself but from what I understand it won’t be a problem for the doctor. You might want to call the clinic and see if you should reschedule if you start it. I don’t think you’ll have to, though. It may seem gross but gynecologists see that kind of stuff literally every day, all day.
