Well, i am getting a hamster. But me and my mom are trying to figure out how to adopt. Do you have to sign papers? Do you do it online and pick the hamster up at the shelter? How does it work?

I volunteer for a local humane society shelter that does get smaller animals like g. pigs, hamsters, and rabbits. There are different policies at different shelters, but I can tell you how ours works.

You do have to physically come in to the shelter where you will fill out papers, pay fees, etc. You will have to go through some meeting where they ask you questions and give you information so you know what you’re getting into. You are also required to be at least 21 years old in order to adopt. So you may want to bring your Mom with you, because your local shelter will most likely have a similar policy.

    Good luck!

you’ll have to sign papers with your address and stuff, and you’ll have to be 18 to purchase the hamster

I’ve never heard of adopting one from a shelter, we always bought ours at a pet shop.

if you want to adopt, contact a local shelter, or you can buy one at a store. It depends on which shelters you go to but you for sure do not buy one online for a shlter, but you might for a pet store, you should look up local shelter

Well, I guess it is the same way as adopting a cat or dog.

Do NOT listen to the peope that said to go to the pet store. Pet stores do not take good care of their animals and tend to missex their small animals so you may be coming home with more animals than you expected. I bought two dwarf hamsters from PetCo last year and I realize that I am lucky that they are both males.

just go in, if they have one it cost around 10, why not just buy a young one from petsmart? you know they only live 2-3 years. ones at the shelter are bound to be close to a year old already, but it’s your choice.
