How long does it take to housebreak a Pekingese dog?

I have a one year old Pekingese who I adopted two months ago. He came from a farm and was not housebroken, so when he got to me, I had to start from scratch with his training. The longest he has gone without an accident is a little over a week, but generally he pees on my carpet every few days. I’m wondering if anyone has any experience with housebreaking a pekingese. How long did it take for the accidents in the house to stop? I hear they can be more difficult to train than other dogs. I’m very diligent about taking him out and he’s on a schedule for his walks. He has never had a poop accident in the house, and generally he pees outside. But, every few days he pees in the same spot on the carpet. I’ve tried every enzymatic spray but I’m not sure how to make him ‘get it’ not go to in the apartment! Any pekingese tips would be appreciated!
He is neutered, and he also is crate trained. He sleeps in his crate at night and I keep him confined in the kitchen when I’m away or I can’t keep my eye on him. He’s never had an accident in his crate or the kitchen, and whenever he’s let out I take him directly out for a walk. I’m just not sure if I’m missing something or if it’s just going to take more time.

My peke took over a year before he was totally housebroken. Now if he really has to go the bathroom and I’m not home, he will jump in the bathtub and use it. A lot of people think this is gross, but considering his other option is to use the carpet, I think it’s great. The only way I can figure that he learned this trick was by following me to the bathroom and associating typical bathroom "smells" with his own bodily functions. Two months is a very little amount of time in the potty training world though, so don’t expect him to be perfect yet– would you expect a human child to be fully potty trained in two months? Accidents happen, just be patient, and enjoy your pet. Pekingese are great!

It doesn’t matter the breed of dog for how long it would take. Also, each dog has it’s own personality, therefor, there is no time limit on housebreaking. Just constant and consistant training.

Try using a bell on the doorknob and ring it yourself every time before you take him outside. Eventually, he will ring the bell himself with his nose when he needs to go outside. :)

You really should get a crate and confine him when he is inside but you cannot pay attention to him.

There is a spray called "Pee Be Gone", it works well for getting dogs to stop remarking spots. But generally you are going find that you need to block him from that area until he is fully housebroken.

Is he neutered? If not, he will probably continue to mark the spot. Also if you care able to catch him in the act, a quick spritz from a spray bottle with 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water, and a firm no will be a big help. This must be done when he is in the act only or he will not understand.

Type your question in the green bar at the top of the page to find more answers from the same questions that have been asked before.

I always post my questions there first & usually find an answer that suits my question.

Potty training, house breaking is a over asked questions so you will find a lot of answers.

Puppy training is puppy training & it lasts as long as it takes.

well…..I had the same problem with my pekingese we just decided to put newspapers on the places where it had it’s acidents. You should try taking it outside during different times like…In the mornings, afternoon, and at night so it can have a potty break outside. Well this is wat I did and it got used to it and started scratching on doors when it had to go again.

I would try having him there with you when your cleaning up his mess and try telling him bad dog for peeing on the floor. It will take some time and dogs aren’t dumb to where he will learn that if he pees on the floor or in the house it’s bad.

Or if your giving him treats for good behavior I would withhold all treats for that day and tell him no treats for peeing on the floor. Either way will take time and patience, but eventually he will learn.

the first thing to remember about house training a puppy is there ability to hold themselves is limited. a rule of thumb is they can hold "it" usually 1 hour for each month of age. 2 months old = 2 hours, 3 months old = 3 hours, etc. when your puppy wakes up (morning, nap, whatever) the pup has to go, right then! take the pup out. when the pup eats or drinks, it has to go, take the pup out. after exercise (play), take the pup out. when the pup does it’s thing outside praise it. a lot. tell the pup how good, how smart it is. you have to pay attention to the pups "looking for it’s spot" behavior. when you see that behavior indoors, whisk the pup out. if you catch the pup in the act, simply tell it "NO!" and whisk it outside. if you find a puddle or pile after the fact, clean it up with an enzyme cleaner (pet food store) get a newspaper and hit…. yourself in the head and say "i should have been paying more attention" daytime training they get pretty fast. night time training is easier if you crate train the pup. also remember the one hour/one month rule. you will have to get up through the night to take the pup out. Good Luck! I Hope everything works out!
