How do you disable the old wireless network when setting up a new wireless access point?

I have a Thompson wireless modem/router and it has a very poor range. I am planning on buying a wireless access point to boost the range. I was reading about how to install them and it says you have to disable the old router from broadcasting the network so the access point can do it. How do you disable the network?

Don’t know your specific router but this is done by turning off the broadcast SSID option in the router which announces it’s presence.
You have to log into Thompson router and disable the wireless. Turning off the SSID only, will still allow it to broadcast a signal, conflicting with the new wireless router/Access Point (AP).
If you cannot turn off the wireless on the original router, simply set the new AP to a different channel. Most wireless AP use channel 6. Try channel 1 or 11 with the new AP, and test your internet speed.
