I know observant Jews don’t eat shrimp and pork, amongst other things, but what verses in the bible are actually referenced to diet?

  • It's That Guy says:

It’s all in Leviticus and Deuteronomy, the laws Moses carried down from Mt Sinai during the Exodus. It’s called the ‘Kashrut’, the set of Jewish dietary laws.

You can’t eat the hindquarters of any animal. You can’t eat any animal that doesn’t chew its cud and have a cloven hoof (meaning only ruminants, only herbivores). No seafood that doesn’t have shells and scales (i.e. no shellfish). Animals must be killed by a specially trained person, a ’shochet’, in a way that is humane and the blood must all be drained, and you can’t eat the blood. If you clean a chicken and find an egg inside you can’t eat that egg.

There are lots of rules! You can find a list of them here, plus some explanation.
